Chambery French Alps for Postcard Friendship Friday #173

grace bailhache chambery france postcard

It’s friday, it’s friday, we gonna party with Beth’s Postcard Friendship Friday. After an exotic trip to Morocco last week, I realised that I never shared postcards from my places, meaning, the city I belong too. Let’s go for it starting with the present moment. …Meet Chambery  located in the Rhone-Alps into the heart of the French Alps.  I leave here since 2010 and it wasn’t my first choice, Idon’t like being far from Paris, but I had to be near the thermal baths and needed moutains for my heath. The city is close to the number one destination in the world for  winter sports. This is definitely the best mountain ski destination, people come from UK, Belgium, Netherland during the ski season with 4 airports providing efficient shuttle services to the ski resorts, winter is a busy season around here, because a lot of travellers who take trains stop by Chambéry to reach the ski resorts by taxi. During summer time, Chambéry is truly a pedestrian’s paradise, I have four lacs and activities around water to enjoy, and if I want to, I can take a train and go to Italy, one hour to reach Torino and less to go to Geneva in Switzerland. That the reason why, I really don’t know Chambery that much, I’m not often there, but when I’m there, the places you see on the postcard are my places.

You can’t miss on the postcard and in the city the famous Elephants Fountain, where four elephant busts stand proudly in the middle of the street. I love thoses elephants and the bus station is near, so I see them two days a week. You can also see my favorite place to take a drink outside and the famous castle « le château des ducs de Savoie » former residence of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy. The château was built from the 13th C onwards up to the present day. It now houses the police headquarters and Savoie’s General Council. When I want to be alone during my lunch time to read, I go there, the stairs are rarely crowded,  it’s ideal when the weather is nice.

The first day of summer, we celebrate the music today all around the country here, I will too, but for now, you can also share your card by joining us right here Postcard Friendship Friday!

  1. Dear Grace, it’s nice to talk about your city too. When I was still skiing we used to spend a day or two in Chambery before moving to Val Thorens. I have some pictures of us in town and near La Fontaine des Elephants.

    1. Thank you coach, I’ll be delighted to see them and I’ll do some myself this summer. I’ve never been in Val Thorens yet, Courchevel is my usual place.

    1. Welcome and thanks for stopping by to share this postcard moment !

  2. Bonjour Grace 🙂 I wish we can do a postcard swap cause I really want non-Paris postcards from France. Thanks for sharing this card from your hometown. I’ve encountered the chateau of Savoy a lot in literature, your post prompted me to read more about it. 🙂

    Happy weekend!

    1. It’s so cute to read some french from you dear. Of course, I’ll be delighted to do a postcard swap with you, whenever you’re ready. I just subscribe to posscrossing few days ago, I have sent 4 cards and not receive mine yet, but I’m patient. Savoy history is interesting let me know if you find something that really attract you in it. As far as I know, Italians are more into the last herate called Emmanuel-Philibert de Savoie ( married to actress Clotide Courau) probably because he is also prince of venice and piemonte.

  3. O o Grace Chambery is nice and very small but Annecy is better come to stay near us. Bisous

    1. Oui ma chère, we are not going to talk about the battle between Savoy and Upper Savoy. This summer, I didn’t plan long trip, so we’ll finally find a moment to enjoy the lake together.

  4. You sound like you must be a very active and busy person. I am also very much a city person, so can understand not wanting to be far away from the urban scene!

    1. Happy to have you here dear from an urban to another ! Smiles ! Active yes, but I’m not that busy dear ! Yes I’m a little curious and doing different things, exploring differents places is such a pleasure, and it’s doesn’t take so much time.

  5. Come back to Paris, Chambery is a paradise if you want to retire. I have done most of the resorts there such as Chamonix, La Plagne, Les Arcs and Courchevel. It’s getting boring now too much british and russian. Bonne soirée

    1. Ah ! ah ! ah ! And you think you are funny dear ? Well, I heard that a lot about Chambery and although there’s a part of true. I also think that you can also find hidded lovely things, places and people even in a small. We just have to give her a chance. And for now I didn’t but I’m doing it right now. And I will probably surprise one day. (Prends garde à toi, tu connais la suite…)

    1. Never mind my dear, better late then never right ? Well lucky you, I love Italy. I can’t see precisely where the moutains are (shame on me), I have spent some time in Rome with my dad, and later study in Milan and leave in Modena with my italian fiance. But it was years ago.

    1. Quelle bonne référence Gilles-Patrick. Je n’y manquerais pas c’est gentiment demandé.
